DAY 5 – SAFARI TO THE CLOUDS

The highlight of this excursion is that the “Safari to the Clouds” offers a unique opportunity to combine three must-see landscapes of Northwestern Argentina in a single day.

We will begin by enjoying the “Road to the Clouds.” During this first stage, we will follow the tracks of the famous Train to the Clouds, admiring this remarkable engineering work that began in the 1920s. The route crosses the Quebrada del Toro to San Antonio de los Cobres. We will make photo stops and visit Alfarcito, a picturesque village located high in the Quebrada del Toro, where we will have breakfast.

We will then continue to the La Polvorilla Viaduct, a stunning engineering structure where the Train to the Clouds currently operates. Afterwards, we will return to San Antonio de los Cobres to enjoy a delicious lunch.

Following this, we will begin the journey toward Salinas Grandes, a completely different landscape from the first part of the trip, with frequent sightings of llamas and vicuñas. At Salinas, we will witness one of Argentina’s most beautiful white expanses, featuring sporadic turquoise tones and almost perfect reflections.

With the assistance of a local guide, we will have time to explore this vast salt flat, the striking turquoise lagoons, and enjoy a special visit to the Eyes of the Salt Flat (subject to weather conditions or restricted during summer by the local communities managing the visits). The guide will also explain the fascinating salt extraction process. This is the perfect place to take the famous perspective photos, jumping shots, and reflections from the pools and salt flat eyes.

After enjoying this natural mirror of salt, we will begin the third stage by crossing the Cuesta de Lipán, an unforgettable panoramic route with a descent of 2,000 meters over just 35 km, showcasing the transition from the arid Puna desert to the fertile, humid valleys.

We will then arrive at the village of Purmamarca, where we will make a brief visit.

From there, we will return to the city of Salta, arriving at approximately 9:30 PM. However, delays may occur, so it is recommended not to book prepaid activities such as restaurants or nightlife venues.

Includes: breakfast, lunch, surprise toast at Salinas, water on board, and entrance to the Eyes of the Salt Flat.

One suitcase per person is allowed. Large luggage must be left at the hotel in Salta or paid as additional baggage.

DAY 7 – RETURN TO SALTA BY EXCURSION

The return trip will be around 4:00 PM, from Purmamarca to the city of Salta.

Passengers may also choose to take an excursion departing from Purmamarca at approximately 10:30 AM, traveling through the Gorge by vehicle.

In 2003, the Humahuaca Gorge was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the category of Cultural Landscape.

From south to north, the gorge begins in Volcán, where green landscapes give way to ochre and brown mountain ranges. Following the Río Grande, the route reaches Tumbaya, home to a beautiful church built in 1796. Continuing along National Route No. 52, travelers arrive in Purmamarca, a village of legends and music, featuring a church dedicated to Saint Rose of Lima from 1648, located at the base of the iconic Hill of Seven Colors.

The journey continues to Tilcara. Further north, after passing Huacalera and the Tropic of Capricorn, the route reaches Uquía, whose church houses one of the most important collections of the famous Arquebus Angels, iconic works of Cusco painting.

The town of Humahuaca, the heart of the gorge, offers numerous natural, historical, and cultural attractions, including the Monument to the Heroes of Independence and the articulated image of Saint Francis Solano, which appears every day at noon in the main square to bless the town.
